CROWN OF THE METROPOLIS

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Hebru Brantley, being a Chicago native, has allowed the city to infinitely affect his life and his work. Drawing from the urban culture and historical aspects that have solidified Chicago as a major creative center, Brantley uses the city as inspiration, subject and canvas. The artist believes that in no other city other would the separate forces of Asian-inspired art, comic book characters, race relations, television pop culture icons, and street art collide to produce a unified portfolio of work than this city of his birth: Chicago.

Hebru Brantley uses his interests, being as diverse as the individuals that compose the neighborhoods of Chicago, to translate his artistic vision. This ability to draw while pulling inspiration from a wide range of audiences, further lends to the true spirit of Chicago’s diversity. The Chicago population serves as inspiration and mouthpiece for the artist’s vision. When viewing Brantley’s work, people from very distinct areas and subcultures of the city can find a commonality to begin a discussion that may otherwise would have never occurred.

Chicago also serves as a part of the actual composition in many of Hebru’s pieces. Feeling that street art is equally as important, and exponentially more accessible to many more people, as high art. Brantley began his career when he set out to beautify the urban landscape in Chicago. While some view graffiti-style arts with contempt and nuisance, Brantley’s works transform the areas they occupy. The dynamic, large scale pieces turn a blank wall, a vacant store side, or a commissioned doorway into a living, breathing work of art that leaves an imprint on all that pass while acting as a timestamp in the rich history that is Chicago art.

Hebru Brantley’s show “Crown of the Metropolis” examines the proverbial princes and princesses of the city and how living the “city life” adversely affects their quality of living and being. Each piece shown in the gallery will correspond with a permission piece outside of the gallery. This idea of the city as a canvas allows the audience to view that which is primarily looked upon as defamation of property as high art instead.

Gallery opening Friday, October 1st 6-10 PM. Show runs through November 30th.

“Crown of the Metropolis” is a part of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs’ Chicago Artist Month 2010. Please visit www.chicagoartistmonth.org for more information.

Three Peas Art Lounge presents the ART WINE PROJECT- an interactive installation celebrating art and wine. From June 15th-July 13th, Facebook fans, Twitter followers and customers of Three Peas Art Lounge can share their thoughts on what art means to them and how it affects, enhances or enriches their life. These ‘art thoughts’ can be written or drawn on the blank labels of wine bottles provided by Three Peas Art Lounge. The person with the most votes on their ‘art thoughts’ will win a custom blend bottle of wine provided by Three Peas Art Lounge.

These bottles will be displayed on the walls at Three Peas Art Lounge through July 31st.

POST-CONSUMERISM: The Artwork of Tiffany Gholar

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Tiffany Gholar is a lifelong resident of Chicago, Illinois. Gholar’s newest series, Post-Consumerism, explores the principles of design using found object assemblages. Her style places great emphasis on color and texture. The majority of her medium scale pieces are constructed of found objects headed for the recycling bin, including cardboard boxes, plastic grocery bags, and packing materials.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

I ask artists who they are inspired by and more often than not the name Jean-Michel Basquiat is mentioned. Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the very most prolific visual artists who left this earth too soon, but at least he, thankfully, left an imminent mark on the art world. When I studied theatre at Howard University and at Northwestern University, my professors often reminded us that the thing that was most required was the suspension of disbelief and open imagination. In order to do this, we were taught to do two things: 1) Keep a journal because you can refer to it to remember your feelings/emotions and 2) Play. Child play is the most imaginative form of theatre. Remember being a child and having a mind un-polluted with all that we now know?  You had the most fun of your life when you transformed a bed sheet into a tent or when your closet became a elevator. As actors, in order to revert back to our fun childish ways, we played “theatre games.” These theatre games were created by a woman, affectionately known as the “American Grandmother of Improvisational Theatre.” The games aided in helping children, theatre students, and even comedians let go of their inhibitions and unlock their capacity for self-expression. Genius work comes from those who know how to let go and let their thoughts run free. A new film that recently won a Grand Jury award at the Sundance film festival allows you to see a true genius a work, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (see trailer below). Actors have Viola Spolin. Artists have Jean-Michel Basquiat. Who inspires you to let your imagination run wild?
